About the Practice

The practice provides counseling, internal investigation, litigation, trial, appellate, compliance training, arbitration and mediation services across a range of competition and consumer law challenges. I am a trial and appellate attorney with over 25 years of experience delivering better outcomes for business clients.

Please take a look at the website's schedule of representative cases, and you'll see a number of precedent-setting matters for household brands and leading financial institutions, health care providers, internet marketers, manufacturers, publishers, corporate directors and officers, trade associations and other businesses.

The firm's matters often present tough issues in antitrust, false advertising, consumer protection, director & officer liability, employment, ethics and compliance, financial services, intellectual property, mergers & acquisitions, privacy or other business law challenges.

Many of the firm's matters arise in the context of "corporate divorces," distressed companies and assets, bankruptcies and dissolutions, receiverships, conservatorships, and other intra-corporate disputes.

I am committed to providing pro bono legal services to underserved communities. A grateful recipient of the Benjamin R. Civiletti Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year award (2014), I also serve as a hearing committee member for the D.C. Court of Appeals Board on Professional Responsibility. I am a longtime member of the American Bar Association's Litigation and Antitrust Sections, and a frequent presenter at ABA and other professional seminars on topics of antitrust, consumer protection, and agency enforcement litigation. I am a contributing author to the ABA treatise Consumer Protection Law Developments.

Biography

Cornell Law School (JD)

The Ohio State University (BA, Economics)

Prior to law school, I worked for the late Congressman Michael G. Oxley, and subsequently for then-State Senator Paul E. Pfeifer in the Ohio Senate. After graduating from law school, I joined the highly-regarded global competition firm HOWREY LLP, as an associate and then partner in antitrust and intellectual property litigation. After ten years, I joined the pioneering international trade and advertising law firm COLLIER SHANNON SCOTT PLLC in its Washington office, where I became chair of the firm's litigation section. That firm merged into New York-based KELLEY DRYE & WARREN LLP in 2007, where I continued my antitrust, intellectual property and consumer class action practice until joining the top 100 AmLaw firm VENABLE LLP in 2010. There, my practice continued to focus on a variety of consumer and competition matters, with emphasis on distressed companies and director & officer liability within the financial services sector. A year prior to launching Gilbertsen Law Office, I chaired the antitrust and competition practice in the DC office of PIERCE ATWOOD LLP, a New England firm with a storied 130-year history. I am grateful that clients rate me a DC "Super Lawyer" (Thomson Reuters 2013-2018).

I am admitted to practice in District of Columbia courts, many federal district and appellate courts across the country, and The Supreme Court of the United States.
